Vince Welch

Production/Mixing/Engineering

Hi. My name is Vince, and I'm a producer and engineer. My passion is helping artists make great albums, and i've been fortunate enough to spend the last decade doing that. I'm not really one to talk about myself too much, so I'll let some of the people I've worked with do the talking.

Vince Welch is the mixer/producer I recommend for all rock and alternative artists on the east coast. He’s hands down the most creative and skillful engineer to emerge from Berklee in the ten years I’ve been there. His work makes me envious because of how well he combines the mind of an artist with the technique of a skilled craftsman. I admit to stealing a tip or two from him. When an engineer/producer is recruited as a full time band member, as Vince was with Bent Knee, it is safe to say that he has a unique and valuable vision. Vince is in the early stage of an exceptional career so I strongly recommend that artists book him while they can! Truly an extraordinary talent.
— Susan Rogers (Prince, Barenaked Ladies, David Byrne)
Vince is an incredibly inspiring person to collaborate with in the studio. He’s truly a master of his toolkit and I’ve learned some great tricks while watching him work. As a producer, he has a deep understanding of what works in a song, and the language to be able to effectively bring a large group of musicians together to make it happen.
— Bradford Krieger (Big Nice Studio)
I’ve worked with Vince on multiple albums as a recording engineer, mixing engineer, and producer. I can comfortably say he’s one of the most attentive and detail oriented engineers I’ve ever had the pleasure of collaborating with. He understands the vision and aesthetic of a project and focuses on enhancing and augmenting the sound to further define the idea. Vince also tends to help find different viewpoints and expose portions of the sound that the artist may otherwise have missed. Vince’s low key and relaxed style makes tracking days feel less stressful and generally more calm. I love working with Vince and plan to work with him on many other upcoming projects of my own!
— Mark Aylward (Mammox, The Department of Everything, The Gruesome Twosome)
Vince is a producer who deeply understands and honors the creative process. He is never in a hurry to get to a creative destination - instead, he patiently observes the process and lets it play out, gently guiding the artist on the journey, helping them avoid pitfalls and blind alleys along the way. Vince’s willingness to relinquish control and to follow where creativity leads allows him to make productions that are consistently unique, surprising, and vibrant.
— Matt Beaudoin (Q Division Studios)
Vince is very good at finding the important moments in a song and making choices that build a sense of gravity to those crucial spots. He inventively finds ways to make the dynamics more compelling and strengthen the groove and sense of space. He is so attentive to what a song needs in order to be its best self and has a huge vocabulary of techniques to get it there. But the most impressive thing about Vince to me, is that when you present him with a song that is unconventional he always discovers or invents new techniques to find the magic waiting to be heard. I’ve recorded more than a dozen albums with Vince over the last nine years and hope to continue working with him for many years to come!
— Ben Levin (BLG, Bent Knee, Justice Cow)
I’ve worked with Vince for about 7 years now and in that time I’m hard pressed to think of anyone that approaches their work with the same level of dedication and creativity. Vince has a brilliant musical mind and he doesn’t do anything halfway. The advantage of possessing those two qualities is apparent in his work - it’s ridiculously good.
— Matt McArthur (The Record Co)
Vince sets himself apart from the pack with his versatility and creativity. Sometimes he’ll sit back and let the music speak for itself but if you want he’ll become a hidden member of your band and take the music to a whole other level. I’ve seen him do this over and over in a variety of different arrangements and genres and it blows me away every time.
— Elliott Klein (The Bloodline, Bright & Loud)
I was already a fan of Vince’s work with Bent Knee - his approach to crafting sound is so much more than simply balancing the mix! Working together, I was consistently delighted with the results. It often felt like Vince intuitively knew what I was going for, and it was clear that he genuinely cares about making the songs sound as good and as engaging as possible. He is wonderful to work with, and I consider myself very lucky to have had his input on my music!
— Katie Morton (April Fish)
I had always understood engineering, producing, and mixing as highly technical and un-artistic until working with Vince. As a producer his approach to fleshing out a piece is unlike anyone else I’ve worked with, the amount of forethought, care, and “flavor” added is wholly unique to Vince. As an engineer Vince is professional, collaborative, and a great hang. He is currently my go-to for getting another set of ears on a mix. I am very grateful for our time together, Vince was one of the first producers I worked with and in turn inspired me to pursue mixing and producing myself.
— Josh Friedman (That One Eyed Kid)
Vince somehow manages to transform even the best musical ideas into something staggeringly better. I’m consistently stunned by his ability to elevate the work of others. He’s exceeded my expectations on every single project we’ve worked on together. If you’re looking for a producer or mix engineer, look no further. Vince is a gracious collaborator and an artist of the highest caliber.
— Chris Baum (Dropkick Murphys, The Dear Hunter, Bent Knee)
I’ve had the pleasure of mastering quite a few projects that were produced and/or mixed by Vince Welch. I must emphasize the word “pleasure”, even though a mastering engineer is often expected to remain objective and somewhat separate from the creative aspects of the project at hand. This is impossible for me when working with Vince. His technical standards are as high as any I’ve encountered, but it’s the creative intricacies of his work that engage and fascinate me every time. Vince always seems to see into the essence of the music, sculpting sonic details that may be subtle, or even shocking in the best way possible. I know Vince only from afar - he sends me wonderful things, I have great fun working on them, and I send them back, but I have strong sense that Vince is a truly artistic fellow and obviously a great collaborator. It shows in everything he gets his hands on.
— Randy Roos
Right from the start, Vince wanted to hear exactly the kind of vision that I had for my mix, and throughout the whole process he was extremely accommodating and attentive in working with me to make that vision a reality. I’m a very picky person and he had no issues going back and forth editing little details and making minute changes to the songs. It seems like Vince is really passionate about using his knowledge to maximize whatever emotion the artist he’s working with wants to evoke, but he’s also creative and offered a number great production ideas in line with the vibe that I wanted that I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise. Most importantly it felt like Vince was working with me on my music more than working ‘for me’ or ‘on it’. As creative types, I think that the most vital thing to look for in a mixer is someone who can absorb your creative vision and attack it with the same passion that you would as an artist if you had their knowledge and abilities. That is exactly the impression that I got from Vince while having him mix my band’s album and should we require another great mixing job he’ll be the first person that comes to mind.
— -Charlie Giargiari
Vince’s creativity and leadership shine in a studio setting. His ability to consider the big picture while also focusing on crucial details makes him an asset to any project!
— Jamie Rowe (The Record Co)
Vince is an extremely competent mix engineer. He was able to interpret my artistic directive with very little instruction. Vince gave my track a subtle professional glow. I would absolutely recommend him.
